Agriculture employees 42% of the workforce in Pakistan and constitutes 19% of the GDP. Yet the country is a net importer of food. There are 34 major fruits and vegetable clusters and 8 major crops grown in Pakistan however except for 6 crops; the average yield per acre is below the world averages. The low yields result in lower incomes for the farmers which mean fewer resources to re-invest in the subsequent crops thus perpetuating the vicious cycles of poverty and low productivity.

Every day, Vital Green extension staff visits hundreds of farmers and their fields. Farmers are advised based on the Vital Green handbooks, soil analytics, climate information, and crop literature. The emphasis is on tailor-made solutions based on data and best practices. The extension system includes access to senior consultants at the head office. The key learning from different regions and best practices are documented and shared through a knowledge management system.
